Vietnam Weather by Month
Vietnam does not have one national weather pattern. The North, Central Coast, and South run on completely different seasonal calendars at the same time of year. Each guide below gives you the real regional breakdown for that window, what the weather actually feels like on the ground, which destinations are at their best, and what to book ahead.

FAQs
Is Vietnam safe for tourists?
Yes, Vietnam is widely considered one of the safest countries in Southeast Asia. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. The local people are famously welcoming and hospitable. However, like in any major global city, you should be mindful of minor petty theft (like bag or phone snatching) in crowded areas of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. We always recommend using trusted ride-hailing apps like Grab instead of hailing random taxis on the street.
For official travel advisories and destination information, see the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism.
Do I need a visa to visit Vietnam?
Most international travelers will need a visa to enter Vietnam. Fortunately, the process is very simple. Citizens from all countries can now apply for an E-Visa online through the official Vietnam Immigration portal before departure. This E-Visa is valid for up to 90 days (single or multiple entries). Make sure your passport has at least 6 months of validity remaining from your date of arrival.
Can I drink the tap water in Vietnam?
No, it is not safe to drink tap water in Vietnam. You should always drink bottled, boiled, or filtered water. Most hotels and eco-lodges provide complimentary drinking water daily. When dining out at reputable restaurants, cafes, or our recommended street food tours, the ice provided in your drinks is generally safe, as it is produced in factories using filtered water.
Should I bring cash or rely on credit cards?
While credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) are widely accepted in modern hotels, large restaurants, and shopping malls, cash is still king in Vietnam. You will definitely need Vietnamese Dong (VND) for street food stalls, local markets, and when traveling to remote areas like Ha Giang or Pu Luong. ATMs are easily found across the country, so you can withdraw cash as you go.
How far in advance should I book my trip?
We highly recommend booking your trip 3 to 6 months in advance. This is especially important if you plan to travel during the peak seasons (October to April) or around the Vietnamese Lunar New Year (Tet). Booking early ensures you secure the best availability for top-tier eco-lodges, intimate Halong Bay junk boats, and convenient domestic flight times.
