Overview

This 6-day tour covers Northern Vietnam’s essential destinations without rushing through them. What To Expect

1

Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi

Your driver meets you at Noi Bai Airport with a sign and takes you to your hotel in the city center. Check-in time is usually 2 PM, so if you land early, you might need to leave bags and wait a bit.

Rest of the day is yours. If you have energy, walk around the Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem Lake, both are probably within 10 minutes of your hotel. Grab Vietnamese coffee, watch the organized chaos of motorbike traffic, start adjusting to the time zone.

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Hanoi.
  • Meals: N/A

Day 2: Hanoi City Tour - Full Day (B,L)

After breakfast, your guide picks you up around 8:30 AM for a proper Hanoi tour. First stop is Tran Quoc Pagoda on West Lake, Hanoi’s oldest Buddhist temple dating back to the 6th century. Then to the Ho Chi Minh Complex including his mausoleum (where you can see him preserved in glass) and his former residence-a surprisingly simple stilt house for someone who led a revolution.

Visit the One Pillar Pagoda, which looks exactly like it sounds-a temple built on one stone pillar over a lotus pond. Then to the Vietnam Ethnology Museum, which is actually interesting if you care about the country’s 54 different ethnic groups. Closed Mondays, so you’d go to the Women’s Museum instead.

Lunch is included Vietnamese food at a local restaurant. After lunch, see the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university from 1070. Students still come here before exams for luck. The complex has peaceful courtyards and stone turtles that make good photos.

Last stop is Hoa Lo Prison, where Vietnamese revolutionaries were held by the French, and later where American POWs stayed during the war. The Vietnamese call it the “Hanoi Hilton,” though the Americans meant that sarcastically. It’s heavy but important history.

Back to your hotel late afternoon. Evening’s free.

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Hanoi.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.

Day 3: Ninh Binh Day Trip - Hoa Lu, Tam Coc, Mua Cave (B,L)

Early start for the 2-hour drive south to Ninh Binh province. First stop is Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s ancient capital from the 10th-11th centuries. The temples here honor the Dinh and Le dynasties-not massive but historically significant.

Buffet lunch, then the main event: boat ride through Tam Coc. You board a small rowboat (usually 2-3 people per boat) and local rowers-often women-use their feet to paddle. Seriously, their feet. You float along the Ngo Dong River through three caves (tam coc means “three caves”) with limestone karsts towering on both sides.

The whole thing takes about 2 hours. It’s peaceful, scenic, and yes, every photo looks amazing. Be prepared for vendors trying to sell you embroidered goods from their boats, just politely decline if you’re not interested.

Option to cycle through rice fields after the boat ride if you want, or just relax. Then comes the challenge: climbing 500 steps up Mua Cave (also called Dancing Cave) for the view. It’s steep and you’ll be breathing hard, but the panoramic view of the entire Ninh Binh karst landscape is worth it. You can see the river winding through the rice fields and limestone peaks stretching to the horizon.

Back to Hanoi by evening, probably around 7-8 PM.

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Hanoi.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.

Day 4: Hanoi to Halong Bay - Get on the Boat (B-L-D)

Breakfast, check out, then 3.5-hour drive to Halong Bay. You’ll get to the harbor around noon and board your cruise, a traditional Vietnamese junk boat with sails (though most use engines now).

Lunch on board while the boat heads out into the bay. Halong Bay has about 1,600 limestone islands, so everywhere you look there’s another karst formation. UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason.

First activity is visiting Amazing Cave (Sung Sot Cave), which is genuinely impressive, huge chambers with stalactites lit up in different colors. Then swimming stop at a quiet bay if weather allows. Water’s calm and surprisingly clear.

As evening comes, the boat anchors somewhere peaceful. Dinner is served – usually a spread of Vietnamese seafood and other dishes. Some boats offer cooking demonstrations or squid fishing after dinner, or you can just sit on deck with a beer watching the sun set behind the limestone islands.

Sleep on the boat. Cabins are compact but comfortable with AC, private bathroom, actual beds not bunks.

  • Accommodation: Overnight cruise
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 5: Exploring More Halong, Then Return Hanoi (B-L)

Wake up to sunrise over Halong Bay if you’re an early riser. Breakfast on board while cruising through different sections of the bay.

Morning activity is usually visiting a floating fishing village-actual communities living on the water in houses that float. Your guide explains how they make a living from fishing and aquaculture. Some tours include kayaking here, paddling around the floating village and through smaller karsts.

Brunch served around 11 AM as the boat returns to harbor. Disembark around noon and drive back to Hanoi, arriving late afternoon.

You’ve got the evening free. This is your last night, so maybe do that street food tour you’ve been thinking about or buy last-minute souvenirs in the Old Quarter.

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Hanoi
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 6: Departure from Hanoi (B)

Breakfast at hotel, then free time until your driver picks you up for the airport. Flight-dependent-if you’re leaving at noon, you’ve got a couple hours. Evening flight? You’ve got most of the day to explore.

Driver will get you to Noi Bai Airport with plenty of time for check-in.

  • Meals: Breakfast

Frequently Asked Questions
  • The 5-day tour skips Ninh Binh and gives you less time in Hanoi. This 6-day version adds a full day for Ninh Binh (which is worth it) and includes a more comprehensive Hanoi tour covering more museums and historical sites. If you've only got 5 days, that tour works fine. If you can spare the extra day, this one's better because Ninh Binh is genuinely beautiful and different from Halong Bay even though they're both limestone karst landscapes.

  • Ninh Binh isn't a beach, it's inland with rice paddies and river systems. But it's often called "Halong Bay on land" because of the similar limestone karsts, just on dry land with rivers running through. The Tam Coc boat ride is one of those experiences you'll remember. It's peaceful, scenic, and culturally interesting watching how the local rowers use their feet. The Mua Cave climb is optional but the view is spectacular if you can handle 500 steps. You could technically skip it, but most people who do this tour say Ninh Binh was a highlight. It breaks up the itinerary nicely between Hanoi and Halong Bay.

  • The cruise is shared, meaning you'll be on the boat with other travelers, usually 10-20 people depending on boat size. It's not a private charter unless you specifically book that (which costs significantly more). Most people find the group dynamic fine. You eat meals together, but you're not forced to socialize if you don't want to. Cabins are private, so you've got your own space. If you want guaranteed privacy, we can arrange a private boat, but expect to pay 3-4x more. For most travelers, the shared cruise works perfectly well.

  • Hanoi tours involve moderate walking-mostly flat surfaces but you're on your feet for several hours with breaks. Temple of Literature, museums, Ho Chi Minh Complex all require walking around. Ninh Binh's Tam Coc is a boat ride (no walking), but Mua Cave is 500 steps up and 500 steps down. It's steep. Takes most people 20-30 minutes up depending on fitness level. You can skip this if it sounds too challenging, just wait at the bottom while others climb. Halong Bay cruise involves some stairs getting in and out of caves, but nothing extreme. Kayaking requires basic upper body strength but it's gentle paddling, not white-water rafting. Overall, average fitness is sufficient. If you have mobility issues, certain parts can be skipped or modified.

  • October to April is the ideal window. October-November and March-April are probably the sweet spots-comfortable temperatures (20-25°C), lower humidity, less rain. December-February can get cool in Hanoi (15-18°C), especially mornings and evenings. Not freezing but you'll want a light jacket. Halong Bay can be misty and gray, though some people like the moody atmosphere. May-September is hot and humid. June-August is peak summer with temperatures hitting 35°C+ and high humidity. July-September is also typhoon season, which can disrupt Halong Bay cruises. If you're coming in summer, expect heat and occasional rain. If you're coming in winter, bring layers for cooler evenings. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions overall.
