Overview

Our lure fishing Hanoi day trip is built for anyone first timers, seasoned anglers, or just friends looking for something different. There are hundreds of fishing spots around the city, each holding local species you won’t find back home. You might hook into a striped snakehead, a heavy catfish, or one of the other rare Asian fish that make these waters special.

No need to worry about gear or skill, everything is ready, and our guides put you on the fish. Some guests come for peace and quiet, others to chase a bucket-list catch. Either way, this trip gives you the chance to tick off a species, make a story, and head home with more than just photos.

How to target Fish Species Around Hanoi:

Hanoi’s waters hold a surprising mix of freshwater game fish, and each one demands a slightly different approach. It can be confusing at first, but we’ve tested and refined methods that consistently bring results from lure choice to the way you work them.

Striped Snakehead
One of the most popular fish in Vietnam. They’ll take many baits, but slow topwater frogs, jumpfrogs, soft plastics, and vibration lures bring the best results. Snakehead often strike on the surface, so even beginners can watch the hit happen a real thrill for any angler.

Wallago Catfish
A hard-hitting predator related to the European Wels. They love smashing topwater lures like poppers, spooks, and frogs, especially with long pauses between pops. These catfish hit with force, so you don’t need much experience to feel the rush of a serious fight.

Pacu
Strong, fast, and unpredictable. Often called the “GTs of the lake” GT means Giant Trevally, one of the toughest saltwater fish in the world. Pacu fight with the same raw power: blistering runs and heavy pulls. They’ll go for vibration lures, crankbaits, and frogs, making them an exciting target for both beginners and seasoned anglers.

Black Carp
Massive fish that can grow well over 50kg. They spend their lives feeding on snails and plants. Small soft baits and sinking frogs are the best way to tempt them. Their size makes them a challenge, but with the right setup and guidance even a first-timer has a real chance to bring one in.

Each lake has its own mix from tilapia and barramundi to peacock bass and even oddballs like skygazers. No two waters are the same, and that’s the appeal: every trip brings a different fight, and often you’ll catch several kinds of fish in a single day.

What To Expect

5:30 AM - Hotel Pickup

Start your day early as our driver and guide meet you at your hotel. This isn’t just a transfer, it’s your first chance to talk fishing, swap stories, and set goals for the day.

6:00-7:00 AM - Arrival at the Lake

Roll up to one of carefully chosen fishing lakes nearby Hanoi, selected based on seasonal activity and target species. Your guide will brief you on conditions, recent catches, and which fish are most active right now.

7:00 AM - Gear Up & First Casts

Rods are rigged, lures tied, and the water’s calling. Your guide will set you up with baitcasting or spinning gear, fine-tune your drag, and suggest the best lures to throw first. That moment when the line first hits the water? Pure magic.

Morning Session – Hunt for Surface Strikes
Early light is prime time for explosive topwater action. Work frogs, buzzbaits, or Whopper Ploppers across the shallows. This is when Snakehead and Wallago catfish love to ambush, heart-stopping hits that will test your reflexes.

Midday – Rest, Refresh, and Keep Casting
Take short breaks by the bank with cold drinks and light bites provided, but the water never sleeps. Midday often brings Pacu and Black Carp into play, giving you the chance to switch lures and techniques to match their feeding patterns.

Afternoon Session – Experiment & Explore
As the day heats up, your guide will change spots and tactics. Try crankbaits for Pacu, sinking frogs for Carp, or poppers for catfish. Each lake is different, and no two casts are ever the same – variety is part of the thrill.

5:30-6:00 PM - Wrap Up & Return

As the sun dips, it’s time for a final cast. Whether you’ve landed a trophy or enjoyed the chase, you’ll leave with new stories and skills. Catch-and-release keeps the fishery thriving, but if you’d like, your guide can prepare sashimi or a simple Vietnamese dish from your catch before heading back to Hanoi.
